WATCH YOUR BACK!: HOW THE BACK PAIN INDUSTRY IS COSTING US MORE AND GIVING US LESS-AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO INFORM AND EMPOWER YOURSELF IN SEEKING TREATMENT
Over the past decade, costs for back pain
care have risen faster than overall medical expenses.
Yet, even as treatment gets more intensive, annual surveys of those with back pain report steadily worse impairments.
While work disability due to heart disease has been falling, disability due to back pain has been increasing. Growing evidence suggests that more MRI scans, narcotic painkillers, injections, and surgery aren’t the solution.
Dr. Richard Deyo documents these disturbing trends and advocates an alternative, less intuitive approach involving more active patient engagement; exercise and cognitive therapy to reduce fear; and shared decision--‐making regarding medical procedures.
Dr. Deyo chairs a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Task Force developing research standards for low back. His book is free of pedantic anatomy lessons, proprietary cures, or pet theories. It exposes those who take advantage of desperate patients and offers realistic advice to patients, doctors, and policy makers for the problem Dr. Deyo characterizes as "the poster child for medical waste."
Chinese Summary/
(LNL)
