This book has given me a whole new perspective. How could we imagine bringing a baby into the world in the back of a coal truck in the freezing cold with dead bodies and rats around you? Most of us take every day life for granted and this truly amazing story just reminds us not to.
As a 43yr old woman, this is the first time I’ve really been able to connect and empathise with what hell is in earth. Men go out to fight, many signed up to it. These women were wives, mothers, mere children themselves and plucked from normal life to being treated as lower life than anything living on this planet. Though whilst Wendy Holden tells of the profound cruelty and numbing fear she also manages to lay it alongside the incredibly brave and courageous acts of kindness and true love that want you to turn every page and gives you hope in humanity.
