L’ARMATA DEI SONNAMBULI (ARMY OF SLEEPWALKERS)
Wu Ming takes on the event that marked the foundation of the contemporary age, putting all the strong suits of its narrative style at the service of the story: epic scale, adventure, unprecedented characters, unexpected points of view. The result is a novel with an epic scale and a wholly contemporary point of view, which encompasses and outdoes everything this literary collective has written from its debut to the present.
Paris, 1793. As a procession of great historical figures goes by in the background, the protagonists of Wu Ming’s latest novel move in the obscure depths of the French Revolution, mingling with sans-culottes, knitting women, mesmerists, gendarmes, and unsuccessful actors.
Marie is a woman of the people who asks the French Revolution to give her freedom, but also bread for herself and her son. Instead, what she will wind up with is a different life.
Leo is an actor who has immigrated to Paris from Italy, following in the footsteps of the great maestro Goldoni, in search of fame and fortune. He will discover that the revolution offers the most promising stage, but one from which it is also possible to tumble to one’s ruin. D’Amblanc is a very particular sort of doctor, a student of the great Mesmer before the revolution, and he carries on his master’s practices even in the new age prompted by the great cataclysm. But the axiom that has always guided his steps is now beginning to wobble, leading him to a quest that will take him to the heart of France and of his own nightmares. The man who calls himself Laplace is a paladin devoted to a cause. He has a spider’s patience. He chooses to hide amidst the masses, to put himself and his theories to the test. He dreams of an army of sleepwalkers.
Running through the various plot lines, as faint and turgid as a Greek chorus of drunks,
there twists and turns the mocking, harsh voice of the commoners of Paris, studding the
story with ferocious stiletto wounds and keeping it closely tied to the moods of the people
– the witty wisecracks, and the filthiest and least appropriate thoughts of those who have
nothing to lose and everything to gain from a revolution.
A unique literary exploit, a book that calls into question the origins of all power, as well as
a wildly amusing ride.
Chinese Summary/
(XAT)

Wu Ming is Italy’s best-known writing collective and one of the most significant authors of
historical novels of recent years. The Chinese name, which means «anonymous», is both a
tribute to Chinese dissidents and an explicit reference to their rejection of the cult of the
author. Their most recent books are Altai («Stile Libero», 2009 and «NumeriPrimi», 2011)
and Anatra all’arancia meccanica («Stile Libero», 2011).
