WILBERFORCE

We’re so thrilled to share WILBERFORCE, which was a personal pick of Jonathan Galassi, the head of FSG, and was bought by him in a pre-empt in an exciting two-book deal!!

Wilberforce is a gorgeous, sprawling debut about a seventeen-year-old boy undergoing a crisis—mental, emotional, sexual, spiritual—at a school that is falling apart. A cross between Rudyard Kipling’s Stalky & Co and Sara Waters’ Fingersmith, Wilberforce evokes a vanished world that ought to have nothing to do with us and yet somehow does.

England, 1926, adrift. All the good men have died in the War. At St. Stephen’s Academy, East Riding of Yorkshire, the boys are violently bored. They want to thrash each other, tear each other’s clothes off, drink themselves into oblivion...for preference all at once. Morgan Wilberforce, for one, is going off the rails. Everything he touches turns to disaster, even the sensational Charles Spauling. He senses a shadow waiting to destroy him though he knows nothing matters in their age. Still, on master, John Grieves, has not given up on him. Grieves has no idea what will help, the light of his intellect, the force of his personality, even first aid from the trenches, yet he feels compelled to try.

As Morgan and the Academy lurch toward cataclysm—heart, mind, body, soul—will the shadow have its way? Or does something exist that can sort them out, something to keep the darkness at bay and show them who they are? In the cooped-up, frustrated English boarding school world, Wilberforce explores the deepest intersections of sexuality, grief, and spiritual struggle.

(DC)
