THE PUZZLE FACTORY: SPIES COURTESANS, AND CHARLATANS IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR
The Great War initiated industrial scale killing and adopted technology as part of the panoply of war. The airplane, the tank, poison gas and a host of other killing machines and substances made
their global debut. Remarkably, the other dramatic addition to war, diplomacy and subversion was the introduction of the professional spy agency. It was a modest beginning for some – Britain’s
famous MI6 or SIS began in 1909 in a small apartment. France, on the other hand, has had a much longer history.
In 1871 the French Deuxième Bureau (part of military intelligence) was established but they squandered their prewar years trying to prove Alfred Dreyfus, a French Jewish General Staff officer, was a German spy. The German military intelligence predated the German Empire and was established in 1866 as part of Prussia’s intelligence effort to undermine and spy on the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The espionage game in the First World War,however, oscillated between a small number of professional intelligence agents and a host of courtesans and charlatans. Characters like Mata Hari and Sidney Reilly were used as much as they used the covert world of intelligence gathering and in the end paid a harsh price for a lifestyle of deceit and
betrayal. Ultimately, the strange and eccentric characters that vied for the collection and sale of information contributed to the origins of the tradecraft of the spy in the Second World War and that of the Cold War.
(XAT)
