English Summary/英文概要： It’s a beautifully written and moving novel set in England during the time that Einstein was made famous for his theory of relativity and quantum theory. The tendrils of these theories creep into the novel’s landscape as the way people view the matter that makes up the Universe begins to shift. They are also a major source of interest to one of the main characters, Oscar Greenwald, an awkward and shy but naturally gifted young scientist who makes his way to Cambridge University and is a regular interloper into the family life of the Melvilles and their estate, Ellinghurst.
The Melville family suffers the tragedy of losing their only son during WW1. Aubrey Melville, the father becomes obsessed with the fortunes of the house and how it will survive after he dies. Eleanor, the mother, consistently uninvolved in her daughters’ lives becomes even more absent as she retreats into a world of spirits and mediums, desperate to regain contact with her son. Phyllis, the eldest daughter dreams of escaping Ellinghurst and succeeds by making the most of the opportunities for freedom afforded to women by World War One. Jessica Melville, the youngest daughter longs to find a husband and mourns for old ways of ‘coming out’ and debutant balls. Instead she must make her own way in London under the supervision of the less than suitable widower, Gerald. Oscar, who as a child was an outsider at Ellinghurst, finds himself increasingly tied to its fate as the novel works towards revealing the family’s biggest secret.

Clare Clark is the author of two highly acclaimed historical novels: The Great Stink (longlisted for the Orange Prize) and The Nature of Monsters. Born in 1967, she graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge with a double first in History, and now lives in London with her husband and two children.
