At a vast, underground Supercollider facility in New Jersey, two scientists have managed to open a “gate” to a “baby universe” so that quantum behavior at the subatomic level – where matter can be temporarily in more than one place at the same time -- is released into our visible, daily world. The narrator Jacob Kelley has been in contact with one of the physicists who created this and who is found murdered in the lab. Jacob becomes temporarily divided into two persons (upspin and downspin) – the “downspin” Jacob in jail awaiting trial for the murder of the physicist who visited him, and the “upspin” Jacob desperately trying to find the killer and also protect his family from the evil force he calls (from Romanian legend), the “varcolac”. A brilliant “quantum thriller”.
The sequel, SUPERSYMMETRY features Jacob’s daughter, split into 2 people who did not subsequently merge. Ten years later, the sisters must fight another “varcolac”, an unknowable creature from a baby universe who has the power to destroy all humanity. A race against time, with Jacob’s two daughters – one on the police force, the other a physicist --working desperately to stop the varcolac from killing the entire human race.

David Walton is a science fiction and fantasy author whose debut novel, Terminal Mind, won the 2008 Philip K. Dick Award. He is the author of Quintessence (Tor, 2013) and Superposition (Pyr, 2015) and their sequels.
His short fiction has appeared in Analog and Baen’s Universe, as well as in multiple anthologies, and won a number of awards, including the Jim Baen Memorial Award in 2009.
He lives near Philadelphia with his wife and seven children.
