	         Book ID/图书代码: 06435014B72717
English Summary/英文概要: Remember. No one talks.
For generations, the legend of the Hatchet Grandma has haunted the quiet residential area of Suvikylä in Finland. It is told by teenagers who gather in the basements of local apartment buildings and inside abandoned villas in the surrounding forests. This folklore is fueled by the mysterious disappearances that have taken place in the area over decades.
Saila returns to her childhood stomping grounds to work on her doctoral thesis on urban folkore.
She is surprised to find out that the legend of the Hatchet Grandma seems to have lived on to this day, uninterrupted by the modern world. Despite the presence of smartphones and computers, teenagers still hold secret storytelling sessions and talk about an elderly woman who kidnaps and kills children with a hatchet. And more amazingly, the legend seems to have grown from a simple scary story into a semi-cult with its rules and traditions. Saila is excited and hires a teenage Somali girl as her informant to report on the storytelling sessions. When the girl disappears, Saila realizes that she might be dealing with something far more serious than she expected.
Another returnee is Samuel, who comes back to the area in order to arrange for the funeral of his father whom he hasn’t seen since he left home at the age of eighteen. In his father’s apartment, Samuel finds an old VHS tape with his name on it. When he watches it, he is shocked to see a secretly filmed intimate moment with his first love Julia, who disappeared mysteriously in 1987. On the tape, Julia turns to look at the camera and says something as if trying to send a message.
Confused by who could have filmed the tape, Samuel is suddenly overwhelmed by repressed childhood memories. What is more, he is faced with the possibility that Julia might still be alive.
In their own ways, both Saila and Samuel are forced to embark on a quest to look for answers for some of the darker questions concerning their childhood. This leads them to the deserted, decaying villas on the outskirts of the residential area and a secret history that gave birth to the story of the Hatchet Grandma, a bloody legend that might not be legend at all. This is a legend that has the power to scare people into silence and make those who dare to speak disappear.
             Chinese Summary/
(Sandy)
Awards/获奖情况:Hatchet Grandma is a gripping Gothic thriller and a sinister love story that grows more intense as each new piece of the puzzle is revealed. With a rapid pacing reminiscent a Stephen King novel and the eeriness of Twin Peaks it recalls the pains of adolescence – a time when the light always feels brighter and the shadows much, much deeper. “Granny Hatchet is grippingly constructed; it combines urban legend, ancient sea creatures, conspiracy theories, growing pains and traumas from adulthood. And, most importantly, it holds a reader effectively in its grasp. This is a truly scary book….the stakes grow higher from one chapter to the next, and character destinies become intertwined…Hautala is a trailblazer who, from one book to the next, has elevated Finnish horror to a new level.”
– Turun sanomat newspaper, Finland

“Hautala represents the elite of Finnish horror literature…Granny Hatchet forces a reader to stay up in the dark and read – no, devour – just one more chapter of his seamless prose.”
– Morren maailma (“Morre’s World”) literature blog, Finland
