THE FANGIRL’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY: A HANDBOOK FOR GEEK GIRLS

This fun and feminist girl-power guide to the geek galaxy gives lady nerds the lowdown on everything from fanfic to cosplay to attending your first con.

Fanfic, cosplay, cons, books, memes, podcasts, vlogs, OTPs and RPGs and MMOs and more--it’s never been a better time to be a girl geek. The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy is the ultimate handbook for ladies living the nerdy life, a fun and feminist take on the often male-dominated world of geekdom. Author Sam Maggs brings some serious geek cred to guide readers through the in(ternets) and outs of geek culture, with tips, playthroughs, and cheat codes for everything from starting an online fan community to planning a convention visit to supporting fellow female geeks in the wild. With useful sidebars and never-before-seen interviews with geek girl icons like Felicia Day and Tamora Pierce, this book is loaded with interesting, unexpected and hard-to-find facts, all in the common language of nerdery. Best of all, the author takes a stand for geek girl empowerment, urging girls to let their freak flags fly and stand up for themselves when haters gonna hate, with chapters like "Support ALL the Ladies! Why Feminism in the Nerd World is Key" and "The Fake Geek Girl is Here to Destroy Everything You Love--LOL JK She Doesn’t Exist." The Fangirl’s Handbook is, at its heart, a celebration--of obsessing over fictional characters, finding the tribe that shares your "ships" and "feels," rooting on other ladies to kick butt and take names, and doing it all with pride.

The book covers all facets of geekdom--from video games to Game of Thrones, any geek girl can find something she relates to.

A good potential followup/companion to Geek’s Guide to Dating, balancing out its male-centric advice with girl power

Excellent design à la Geek’s Guide; this book will be a real keepsake for the geek girl’s bookshelf.

For fandom n00bs, the entrance into this brave new world can be overwhelming. Maggs breaks down the process and gently guides you into a land you’ll never want to leave.

Too often girls are told to keep quiet and calm and not to express their passion for geeky things. This book is the opposite--a high-spirited call to arms that’s the first of its kind. The author’s not going to shy away from the f-word--feminism--either.

Excellent author platform in the geek community: weekend editor at Geekosystem, regular contributor to the Mary Sue, and has had writing in many, many internet outlets including The AV Club, Mashable, Gizmodo, and Digg.

Chinese Summary/

(LNL)

This a a fun, surface-y, and well-illustrated book. With a little cruising and skimming you could probably polish it off in 30 minutes. This is not a bad thing! There’s a lot of basic information in here, perfect for a tween or teen who is ready to expose herself to different flavors of nerd culture. And those who are ready to move into deeper levels of geek, there’s a lot of practical information about cons, cosplay, and media.

The big question with a fairly brief book like this is -- does it have to be a book or would it function better online? In this instance, I wholeheartedly feel that this is a book. It is well-designed, punchy, and satisfying in this format. It is engineered for quick access to different sorts of info. It is leaf-throughable. It will happily sit on the foot of someone’s bed for months and be picked up and referred to in a haphazard fashion dozens of time. So, yea, a book not a site.
