Oom Marius is a storeowner in a conservative South African town, who has just installed a lobster tank in his shop to impress the town beauty. Whilst lamenting such a hasty (and unsuccessful) move, he learns that his wife, Tannie Hettie, must have cancer treatment in Cape Town, which will mean shutting up the shop. Salvation arrives in the form of Petrus, Marius’s black shop assistant, who finds his voice and offers to run the shop in Marius’s absence.

When the local pastor informs his congregation that a black man will manage the shop, tensions flare, and as soon as Tannie Hettie and Oom Marius leave for Cape Town, a group barricade the shop front, and battle commences.

Collette Victor’s charming and humorous novel shows us the worst and best of small-town lives, and their associated politics.
