Years of aggression against the West, its Middle Eastern and African neighbours, and the Libyan people themselves, had led to US and UN sanctions and to Libya s isolation. A pariah on the world stage, ridiculed as a Mad Dog , Gaddafi struggled to maintain order by cracking down on Libya s restive population. Following the rise of al-Qa ida and the war in Iraq, the international community threw Gaddafi an unexpected lifeline. The rogue state became a much-sought-after ally, striking deals with the West and promising internal reforms unlikely ever to be realised. As this revelatory book conclusively demonstrates, however, Gaddafi would soon reap the whirlwind, as his feints toward reform actually engendered a revolutionary movement that proved all too real and powerful to be put down. The author of Translating Libya: The Modern Libyan Short Story, he is currently a Social Enterprise Fellow at the Yale School of Management. He lives in Berkeley, California.
