An intensely dramatic challenge to theories of decision-making from a professor at UCL who makes life-or-death decisions under extreme pressure.
When trauma specialist Kevin Fong arrives at a traffic accident that’s minutes old, he has only seconds to save lives. Here, at the extreme edge of cognition, theory is almost meaningless: instinct and training take over. Sometimes, in fact, the theory is dangerously wrong.
From surgery at the roadside to triage on the battlefield, from aviation to high frequency trading, Fong takes us on a visceral journey, telling stories of astonishing skill and catastrophic error, to the limits of human perception in search of the truth about decisions. Blending memoir with reportage and the latest science, his book shows that even the most renowned theories are inadequate when tested against this reality. Given the ever-increasing pace at which we live, he challenges the notion of a ’zero harm’ culture and argues instead for a radical new model of ’graceful failure’: decision-making systems that exploit the inevitability of error as a means to improvement and that mitigate the mess and blur of real decisions made in realtime.
Chinese Summary/
(XAT)
