THE ENTIRELY TRUE STORY OF THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB

English Summary/英文概要: *To save her small New England town from being overrun by beings from Norse mythology, eleven-year-old Pru must recover a lost Viking artifact, befriend a talking (and uncommonly rude) squirrel, and discover the unexpected secret behind THE ENTIRELY TRUE STORY OF THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB.*

Adam Shaughenessy’s THE ENTIRELY TRUE STORY OF THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB reads like Diana Wynne Jones crossed with Percy Jackson.

Questions are like mysteries waiting to be solved. So when eleven-year-old, wouldbe-detective Pru receives an invitation with the question “WHAT IS THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB?” written on it, she feels compelled to investigate.

Her investigation leads Pru and her new classmate, ABE, to the mysterious Mister Fox and a number of unexpected discoveries. Mythology is true. Talking squirrels are rude. And “THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB” is a detective agency, the Fantasy Investigation Bureau, created by Mister Fox to look into mysteries that involve mythology and magic. Now the detective needs Pru and ABE to become FIBbers to stop a band of giants from trampling Pru’s sleepy New England town in their search for a lost Viking artifact called the Eye of Odin.

But the giants aren’t Pru’s biggest problem (though they’re plenty big). Someone very close to Pru is lying to her. Loki, the shape-shifting Norse trickster, is lurking somewhere in Pru’s town. In the end, Pru must travel to the magical realm of Asgard to save her friend, recover the Eye of Odin, and prove once and for all that while Loki may be the lord of lies, she’s the better FIBber!

THE ENTIRELY TRUE STORY OF THE UNBELIEVABLE FIB is a tale of gods and mythic creatures loose in a small New England town, and the unlikely pair of kids caught in their midst.

Chinese Summary/

(LNL)

Awards/获奖情况:“Debut author Shaughnessy skilfully weaves Norse myth, the story of Baba Yaga, and Pru’s pain over her father’s death into an action-packed story full of heart. Pru is relatable and real as she learns to trust people again, not to mention brave as she confronts ancient villains. It’s a moving exploration of the ways people can close themselves off to magic in the world, as well as face grief scarier than any frost giant.” —Publisher’s Weekly

“This story offers pleasing elements, including an authentic boy- girl friendship, fresh musings on the place of magic in childhood, and original, vividly depicted scenes (check out Mr. Fox’s henhouse, a tiny shack with nearly infinite possibilities inside). Shaughnessy’s imaginings show promise, and his puzzles and plot twists will absorb and intrigue younger readers, as they consider the book’s central questions about truth, magic, and adventure.” —Kirkus Reviews

“In a vein similar to Percy Jackson, the Imaginary Veterinary books, and even Men in Black, this strong debut is shaping up to be an intriguing series. Shaughnessy seamlessly blends Norse and Russian mythologies with the genres of mystery, fantasy, and adventure all the while hitting upon some deeper personal issues such as loss and self-awareness. The conflict is satisfyingly resolved by story’s end, giving it the feel of a stand-alone novel. With the current popularity of Norse characters in pop culture this is not only sure to be an easy sell, but also a book with substance--one to satisfy the cravings of more sophisticated readers looking to sink their teeth into a good folkloric story. A creative, fun mystery that combines a variety of genres and deeper themes.” —School Library Journal
