In The Spell Chanted by Lambs the author tells three apparently unrelated stories from various periods of his life. In the first narrative, the narrator comes from a religious family and his father works as a labourer in the National Iranian Oil Company in the southern oil-rich city of Abadan His early years are spent in a poor Abadan neighbourhood where ignorance, poverty and prejudice become the causes of some harrowing events. These events play an influential role in the narrator’s life well until he becomes a middle-aged man. The next story concerns the succeeding years when the narrator is attempting to construct his fortieth Setar, a traditional musical instrument. This proves to be an almost magical moment that has come after much suffering. The final story is about an operation on the narrator’s eyes and includes his monologues in hospital. In the end, the author artistically weaves these separate narratives into a single story. The Spell Chanted by Lambs is like watching several different films about a person’s life in a nonlinear fashion. The author uses an eloquently original and emotional language to link the past to the future, taking the reader on an unpredictable and surprising journey to the depths of time.

Reza Ghassemi, born in 1949 in Iran is a musician, playwright and novelist currently living in France. His first novel appeared quite late in his life when he was in his forties. The Spell Chanted by Lambs is his first work translated into English. A number of his works have also been translated into French.
