TALLULAH PARK

Did you know the heart is the only organ not completely in thrall to the brain? Specialised pacemaker cells at the entrance to the right atrium are myogenic, meaning that they will contract without an outside influence such as the electrical impulse coming from the central nervous system. Your heart does, in fact, beat before it is first fed by this impulse, while you are still just a seed inside your original home – in utero.

In other words, if you cut your heart out, it could – in theory – continue beating. At twenty-one, Tallulah Park lives alone in a grimy North London bedsit. There’s a sink in her bedroom, a shower in her kitchen, and a strange damp smell that sometimes means she wakes up wheezing. Ignoring old dreams of becoming a nurse, Tallie survives on minimum wage, waitressing at the local greasy spoon. And then she gets the call. “I’m afraid your father has had a heart attack.”

Tallie hasn’t seen him in five years, and Aunt Vivienne, Aunt Gillian – won’t they be at the hospital too? Tallie doesn’t want to see any of them. "Sometimes people are damaged. And sometimes, if you’re damaged, you can’t see past it." That’s what Tallie’s beautiful mother told her one golden autumn day, but it wasn’t meant as a warning: the two of them had all the time in the world, and nothing could possibly damage them.

When Tallie’s mother died, her taciturn father became even colder, packing her off to boarding school within weeks. Her world was thrown into chaos, and when it came to letting Tallie down, her father hadn’t even started.

When Tallie wasn’t running away, she was being tossed around her difficult extended family; a world of sniping aunts, precocious cousins, emigrant pianists and lots of gin, all presided over by an unconventional grandmother, all making excuses for her absent father. And no one felt like answering Tallie’s questions: why did Aunt Vivienne loathe Tallie’s mother? Who was Uncle Jack and why would no one talk about him?

As Tallie grows up, she learns the hard way about damage and betrayal – and that in the end the worst betrayals are those we inflict on ourselves. This is her story about the journey from love to loss and back again.

Chinese Summary/

(LNL)

Liza Klaussmann(红色的天气下的老虎)

"With heartbreakingly understated prose, Kat Gordon lays out the terrible loneliness of a child at the center of an exploded, secretive family. It is an autopsy of how we love and an exploration of forgiveness, both disturbing and shimmering in deceptive simplicity." Liza Klaussmann (Tigers in Red Weather)

“Just finished the novel: it’s so great, feel quite emotional! A compulsive family drama, Tallulah Park explores the devastating effects of keeping secrets. Kat Gordon deftly tells the story of Tallulah’s past, building to a dramatic, unputdownable conclusion in her present. An excellent read.” Emma Chapman (How To Be a Good Wife)
