Life is not a bowl of cherries for Sam. Her relationship with her stepmother is strained and often combative. The town is not disposed to like her, and her social problems are only exacerbated when the witch descendants at school gang up on her. Rumors fly and evidence seems to mount that she is cursed, a notion she has often thought true herself. To top it off, an arrogant ghost is dead set on ousting her when she discovers a stack of old letters in a hidden compartment of her armoire. After an awkward childhood without friends, she is uncomfortable asking anyone for help, even her only friend, Jaxon, the boy next door, and is just as likely to tell you where to stick it as to accept a hand when offered. As she moves ahead in uncovering the lost secrets of the hangings, her haunted situation escalates, and she realizes the only way to survive is to make a deal with the ghost, the enigmatic Elijah… to whom she is drawn but wants more than anything not to believe in.
