CODEBREAKERS (PREVIOUSLY TITLED WORLD WAR ONE DECODED)
Largely forgotten is the story of the WWI code breakers, an eclectic and eccentric group of people, known as Room 40, whose contribution to
winning the war was hugely significant; their intelligence was the life blood of a global espionage operation that tipped the balance in this brutal conflict and its legacy shaped the future of espionage.
Armed with enemy code books that had fallen into Allied hands, they were able to crack naval, secret service and diplomatic codes, listen in to U-Boat communications as they attempted to sink Allied and American shipping, disrupting sabotage operations in the US, tracking and snaring German
spies, creating lightening battle plans on the fly, pulling wireless messages out of the ether and snooping on German efforts to drag neutral countries into the conflict.
The dominating presence of Room 40 was Sir Reginald Hall who commanded a network of field agents stationed across the globe. The cast
of characters were no less extraordinary such as Americans like Captain Howard R. Barnes; women like Lady Hambro who liked smoking cigars at
dinner and Mrs Bailey, a widow prone to love affairs. Canadian General Arthur Currie proved brilliant at using intelligence in battle on the Western Front, where a complex trench code system was developed to try and secure communications. Germany had its own top agents, however: men
like Von Rintelen who was in charge of organising covert operations in the US and code breaker Colonel Fritz Nebel who invented the fiendishly
difficult ADFGX cipher that tormented French code breaking genius Georges Painvin. Painvin nearly killed himself trying to break the code and
in achieving it, was instrumental in the defeat of Germany‟s last great offensive on the Western Front.
This fast-paced and gripping story capitalizes on new research material and for the first time tells of the espionage war on both sides of the Atlantic and where the creation and decryption of intelligence by Room 40 led to Allied victory in WW1.
(LNL)
