Basil Zaharoff was an unusual man, he was sinister, a bully, charming and manipulative, also known as the ‘Mystery Man of Europe’. He enjoyed a flamboyant lifestyle; changed his name several times; was a proficient linguist, and thrice married. Zaharoff dabbled in various enterprises before becoming chief overseas agent of Vickers where he developed an enormous arms network, and prospered accordingly. Zaharoff was credited with ‘engineering’, prolonging and finally bringing the war to an end. His obituary read: ‘Millions died that he might live’. This fascinating and entertaining book is a brilliant read.
