English Summary/英文概要： Rodrigo is a young public servant who could easily belong to what August Strindberg called “The Young Old Men Club”. He works in a museum in Mexico and nothing much happens in his life until his colleague Cecilia slips him a note saying “I do”. That same afternoon, he finds out that someone else has proposed to Cecilia on his behalf. Apathetic and unable to cope with the situation, he feels that he has no choice but to marry her. This is the start of a sinister odyssey that leads to him losing his job and spending his time spying on a chicken in his neighbourhood, aimless and disorientated.
At the same time, a Spanish scholar and writer called Marcelo Valente travels to a rural Mexican community called Los Girasoles (the Sunflowers) to research the life of Richard Foret, a mysterious writer, boxer and artist who met a tragic death in Mexico.
Los Girasoles becomes a meeting point for Rodrigo and Marcelo, whereby absurd accidents and esoteric encounters lead to explosive situations. AMIDST STRANGE VICTIMS is a highly original first novel.
