THE BEASTINGS

One morning at the beginning of the 20th Century a young mute girl takes the baby of the family she works for and walks out across the fells.

An orphan who spent her childhood raised by the Church at St. Mary’s, Belle wants to give the child a better life than the one she herself has known.

Navigating her way through the hills and forests, skirting the edges of towns, Belle relies on nature and the false kindness of strangers to nurse the baby as she pushes herself onward certain that they’ll be pursued.

On her heels comes the local poacher who knows the fells better than anyone, and The Priest of the parish with his own reasons for making sure she is found. Set against the brutal beauty of Cumbria, The Beastings is chase scene as literary fiction, which builds to a dark and shocking climax.

(LYR)

Praise for Benjamin Myers’ Pig Iron:

"Over two decades after those sections of society most reviled by the Thatcher government fought the Miner’s Strike and the Battle of the Beanfield, Myers crafts the legacy of those catastrophic schisms. His poetic vernacular brims with that quality most sadly lost humanity.” – Guardian

"With his latest, first entirely fictional, novel, Myers may have finally arrived." – Yorkshire Post

"Pig Iron sucks you in, takes a grotesque twist, and plunges you headlong into a horrifyingly savage showdown." – Bizarre

"Compulsive and engaging... Myers’ deft characterisation remains consistently non-judgmental in this beautifully bittersweet tale of love and redemption in contemporary Britain." – Hull Daily Mail

"Pig Iron is that rare book: compelling, beautifully written, full of warmth and vitality, with a lingering tang of urgent pertinence." – Michael Stewart, author of King Crow

"An ardent belief in the healing power of nature is a recurring and prevalent theme in the book - made all the more powerful by Myers’ often poetic writing style." – Durham Times
