They’re helped by three unlikely friends--Gino Santoro, the owner of a Queens speakeasy, The Yankee Club; a platinum blond hooker; and the gorgeous daughter of a war hero who seems convinced Jake really is his fictional detective character, the roguish Blackie Doyle. During the investigation, Jake and Laura encounter celebrities that frequent New York society, literary circles and the theater--among them, Dashiell Hammett, Lillian Hellman, Cole Porter, Babe Ruth, Joe Kennedy and his three sons. Despite their reawakened feelings for each other, Jake and Laura uncover a plot involving an international banking cabal to assassinate President Roosevelt. To stop this sinister scheme, they must gather the proof they need before they too become its victims.
